Prairie

"Chocolat" Curated by Brian Joiner - group show he produced which is built around the idea of chocolate as a metaphor for escapism from current global, economic and political difficulties. Joiner produced this show once before at Keith Mueller's Flowers and Beyond in Over-the-Rhine almost a decade ago and decided to resurrect it at Prairie this Winter. Before he sadly passed away this past October, Joiner was able to select and contact artists he wished to participate in the show and memorialize his curatorial vision in writing. Brian Joiner conceived of Chocolat as a way to "Respond to the current economy and its resulting societal angst, mistrust and despair. It is an escape, a feel-good, light hearted, poetic vision of artists' experience with chocolate."

The show runs from December 3rd through February 5, 2011, with an opening reception on Friday December 3rd from 6-9pm.
Prairie gallery hours are Tuesday - Friday 10-6pm, and Saturday 10-4pm.

Night Two: "Reluctance of Conscience"- Friday, November 19th from 7 to 10 PM (performance at 8 PM)
Closing reception- Sunday, November 28th from 1 to 4 PM

Alternating between text, image, and sculptural form and using an array of voices both sincere and sarcastic, Brum's work often attempts to provoke his audience into more a complicated viewing experience and gain the attention of both believers and skeptics alike. A constant in the work is a concern with motif, device and self-conciousness along with a love of unusual material.

"c.r." runs through November 28th with gallery hours on Sundays from 1 to 4 PM or by appointment.

Constructed Territory
October 31, 2010–January 9, 2011
Constructed Territory presents a variety of contemporary artists who incorporate maps, cartography, and topographical examination into their work. This exhibition investigates geographical concepts from a range of perspectives to promote themes of exploration, navigation and the representation of physical space. Assistant Professor of Art Tracy Longley-Cook curated the exhibition.

This exhibit will feature 32 artists working in photography, digital and mixed media, sculpture, drawing, printmaking and book arts. As a system of diagramed information, maps define locations, orient the viewer, graph terrain, and delineate borders. Maps traditionally present regions of space, which are transformed into condensed descriptive visual references. Borrowing from the universal language of maps and cartographic techniques, the artists in Constructed Territory examine and redefine the established conventions of our understanding and connection to place.

As a special program in conjunction with the exhibit, Christopher Dietz, a professor of music composition and theory at Bowling Green State University, will be conducting his large ensemble performance Le Chemin de Salut (The Way of Salvation) at Wright State University. This musical concert reflects on the promise, difficulties, and ultimate tragedy that accompanied French colonization in the New World. The piece, sung in its original 17th century French, is comprised of texts excerpted from the journals and diaries of French explorers. This performance will take place in the Creative Arts Center Schuster Concert Hall on January 11th, 2011 at 8pm.

The exhibition and related programs are supported by Wright State’s College of Liberal Arts, the Ohio Arts Council, and the Friends of the Galleries.

Gallery hours are Wednesday and Friday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. All visitor parking areas on campus are free, and parking at the Creative Arts Center is unrestricted after 4pm Friday and on the weekends. The Art Academy of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Art Museum will present an exhibition and free lecture by artist-in-residence Yamini Nayar, a photographer who merges architectural and sculptural elements with photography to explore representations of place and memory in imagined, psychologically disconcerting environments. Her miniature dioramas are intentionally devoid of human interaction, and they convey the sense that chaotic events have just occurred in those spaces. After constructing scenes fraught with unresolved circumstances, Nayar photographs her architectural assemblages with a large-format camera, amplifying the scale of the original constructions . The Lecture will take place on Wednesday, October 6 at 7:00 pm. in the Cincinnati Art Museum's Fath Auditorium. Reservations are not required but early arrival is recommended.

"Have You Seen This?!" examines the idea of the inside joke created in the world of internet memes and pop culture. A bit of cultural information, the meme is constantly evolving as it is rapidly circulated. Social networking and constant mobile access to information media have allowed images and videos to be quickly dispersed. The internet meme has become the means by which a generation tied together by hyperlinks and URLs understands culture. However, as available as this information may be, the community reached is often exclusive, limited to those who know where to look.
