Ryan Mulligan mines the best and worst memories of his life to create works that serve as private inventory drawers. Mulligan’s illustrative drawing style, pastel palette and cartoon-like use of line, reduce the severity of his subjects, casting them in a playful light. He often works at home; multi-tasking while watching television, cooking dinner, or playing on the ground with his son. The studio becomes an extension of the home, a playground for a stimulus junkie.
Ryan Mulligan: Inventories + Diagrams will feature drawings, paintings and sculptures that are in part inspired by the role fatherhood has taken in his everyday life. In many ways Mulligan’s new work is the creation of a special language with his son, Hobbs. The loops and swirls and semi-structures relate to the environments Hobbs frequents.

University of Cincinnati Sycamore Gallery
University of Cincinnati's School of ART - MFA thesis exhibition.
The exhibition takes place in two rounds, opening on Friday June 1st and Friday June 8th.

Hoarders
In 840 gallery this week (May 21-25) there is a really compelling painting exhibition on display. Joe Hedges and Nick Scrimenti, the artists of the exhibition, seem to be exploring ideas of manic collection. The boxes (done by Joe Hedges) while multi-colored and varied in size don't exactly make me feel as overwhelmed as an episode of hoarders does or stepping into some people's basements. In fact there is an elegant organized chaos to them.I love the composition of the boxes as well, it offers that fullness that exemplifies the act of hoarding. Nick Scrimenti's self proclaimed messes however incites an anxiousness that straddles the border between comfortable and panic. That incantation is done beautifully. My iPhone photos don't do their pieces justice, so go check out 840. The reception is Thursday May 24th. See you all there!

An exhibition that believes every object has layered authenticity. Coinciding with an exhibition of forgeries by Mark Landis, Fakin' It plays with the concept of "false" by showcasing a sincerity of materials and authentic voices of a group of international artists. Works question the continually blurring line between sculpture and painting. SOme explot the studio as stage for decoys and charlatans. While others are masterfully hand -crafted versions of debris and dollar store items. Fakin' It showcases the playfully acute struggle artists have with honesty.

Semantics
Semantics and Robert Fronk present: Industrial Compositions. Simply put, Fronk composed assemblages from vintage wood milled foundry patterns. Assisted Ready-mades; a sort of quasi - reverse - Bauhaus, where function instead follows form.The work is approached with equal amounts of unconditionality and intentionality. Fronk lived in Chicago for 18 years, painting sets for ballets, opera, theatre and amusement parks. He created faux finishes for painting studios in NYC and Chicago, worked on church restorations and commercial signage, all the while working on his personal paintings and assemblage. Born in Cincinnati, Fronk graduated from The Art Academy in 1981, w/ scholarships and concentration in Drawing and Printmaking. Show opens Saturday April 7th from 7-10pm

"Art for Sport is dedicated to the proverbial jock, and in pure sport fashion is a celebration and contortion between fandom, competitive spirit and camaraderie/angst amongst peers. As a practitioner of art and dedicated sports fan, I find the similarities blaringly blatant, yet the two worlds overly separated due to opposing societal ideals. The work created for this show is centered on a neutral bias between the two professions if you will, by combining a function culmination of both."
Matt Wiseman is a huge sports fan, advocate of wasting your time memorizing sport stats, co-curator at Museum Gallery/Gallery Museum, member of SLAPface, and an occasional artist.
