Small Craft Advisory: Aaron Walker
Small Craft Advisory, an installation of new video and sculptural work by Aaron Walker, presents isolated shards of an overarching adventure narrative; of a doomed boat, an ominous owl candle, and a smoking island, among others. These single shot, video vignettes drift between cinematic cohesion and more improvisatory abstraction, using common domestic items, homemade miniature sets and basic green screen keying to create small actions that elude to larger stories of discreet desire.

Show opens Saturday March 3rd from 7 -10pm and runs through the month of March

Alice Pixley Young’s work focuses on the play of imagery between the forest landscape and the domestic, interior one. Using lighting, projection and sound as elements of stagecraft, her work evokes surreal, dream-like spaces. By juxtaposing domestic materials with landscape imagery, she communicates surreal relationships between the two.  She employs a variety of media including paper casting, fiber dyeing, sound, laser cutting, cast glass and video projection.

Show runs from March 9th - April 13th, with an opening reception on Friday March 9th from 5-9pm

A short clip [bad sound quality/shaky framing, maybe I should take a video art class] of my visit to the reception of the Detritus exhibition. Even though it's not the best of the best clips i still wanted to share because I think it's interesting.

Thoughts on the Deb Sokolow Lecture

Attended the Deb Sokolow guest lecture, and immediately I was glad I did. Animated and funny, Deb opened with the question " When you talk about your art, where do you start?" the answer-- as for most artist-- was an art crisis.

After a critique of her work that was less than pleasant, she took a hiatus from art making. This part of her story is what amazes me the most because she wasn't even thinking about making art and she came up with one of my favorite pieces of work, which she doesn't even consider her art just a personal project. A question was asked at the end of whether or not Deb was looking for inspiration during her hiatus. Deb replied that she was trying to avoid everything "Art." She went on to say, " I think there was a very lucky moment to see a connection. What would you rather be doing instead of art then that thing becomes the art."

Her artwork involves a lot of text mixed in with imagery. The story being told is based in fact [her research can take up to a year] but often departs the truth from there. Even though the actual story may be a work of fiction I feel like Deb is bringing attention to real subjects, an awareness of the world so to speak. I would say she likes to explore conspiracy theories [as seen in her piece on the Denver airport and the Pentagon restaurant. The finished pieces remind me of how I take notes in class and draw connections to other things to help me remember. My favorite thing however is when the question was asked about her Rocky piece being a personal project and whether or not she saw it differently now, she responded that she changed the voice from 1st person to 2nd. In essence she is giving the viewer the voice of the piece and I find that extremely powerful.

Jennifer Wenker in 840

I had never been to the 840 gallery before I went to see Jennifer's show on Friday the 17th. I'm so glad I stopped by. I got the chance to talk with Jennifer about her art, her inspiration, and her life in general.

Jennifer was a nurse before she decided to return to school for her MFA. A self-proclaimed member of the EcoArt movement, that environmental awareness is definitely apparent in her work. In our discussion Jennifer mentioned how she started by doing landscape paintings, fields of grass that gave off a Buddhist vibe. She mentioned that not only do u think about the grass as this huge mass but you start to notice the individual blades of grass. She said that people often tell her that after words they never think about grass in the same way.

My favorite quote from Jennifer's statement that was mounted on the wall was, "I'm interested in the conversation about "outsiders" "others" and how this creates or sets up dualities of marginalization/inclusion and domination/subordination." In our discussion, Jennifer mentioned her growing up in Appalachia and began noticing that other people had different views on some of the same things. We talked about migration of people and the sometime stationary tendencies of people. We also discussed her use of art as a poetic means of persuasion on an important topic. She mentioned that sometimes when discussing things we use loaded words that can shut people off to certain topics, so through art it is easier to digest.

After we had finished our discussion and I had snapped pictures of the exhibition, Jennifer gave me a paper airplane. Attached to it was some seeds used to encourage birds to take flight and through forces of nature start the cycle of tree growth. The airplanes could be seen in the actual exhibition, multitudes of them all flying towards one specific coordinate on a map.
Driving home from the show I passed lots of grass and continued to think about individualism and the part it plays in the whole. When I got home I flew that seeded airplane. When it landed it was immediately attacked by a groundhog in my backyard.

current state of happiness.

This exhibition is open to all interpretations what it means to be

order give someone that right. Marketers are on constant look out for
ways to tap into our apparent need for buy our way to happiness. What
is so wrong with being sad? Can one be happy 24/7? And what is it to
be happy in this new economy?

FREE TRANSFORM
Third Party Gallery’s February exhibition examines the burgeoning cross section of contemporary photography and the internet- moving away from the web browser as the locus in which we view these works, and moving towards less refined definitions of the hybrid-object in the photographic process. Images of images, images of objects, projections of images, images of projections, objects of images, and so on. Free Transform takes a look at the ever-developing model of the photograph in the age of digital reproduction.
